From an ordinary yard to a vibrant oasis with endless summers of grilling and belly flops. See what a comprehensive backyard landscape design can do.
A homeowner in Duarte owned a house with a sizable backyard, yet it lacked character and charm. They wanted a backyard that would match their personality and lifestyle, and that would offer them a fun and functional outdoor space.
However, they were also daunted by the many choices and possibilities. They didn’t want to hire the wrong company and end up with a backyard landscape design that would disappoint them. They wanted a clear and simple plan to create the backyard they dreamed of when they bought the house.
That’s when they discovered Yifu Design Studio. For half a decade we have helped several families in the SoCal area create backyard homes. In between ADU projects, we also would like to showcase how we bring our clients’ visions to life in their outdoor spaces.
The yard design project scope is as follows:
-2408 SF backyard landscape
– Proposed 192 SF storage
– Install trellis on the proposed chill area and at the rear of the existing house
We met with the homeowner and listened to their ideas. They shared their preferences, goals, and concerns with Yifu Design Studio’s founder and landscape architect, Yifu Pan.
Yifu loves working with his clients and getting to know their lifestyles and tastes.
“Our backyard reveals a lot about our personal style. I like to see whether my clients are more modern or more traditional. If I see clean lines, I try to match that in the exterior design. If I see cozy furniture, I try to make the design more about comfort,” Yifu said.
Next, Yifu created concept drawings that helped the homeowner visualize the new backyard landscape design for their outdoor space. They chose a design that included the following features:
Patio: A spacious and elegant patio with a pergola that allows natural light and provides afternoon shade. The pergola may also have a ceiling fan and recessed lighting for added comfort and ambiance.
Storage room: A 16×20 ft storage room with a rolling door that blends in with the landscape. The storage room provides ample space for storing tools, equipment, and other items.
Arched pavement: An arched pavement that matches the arch of the existing planter, creating a harmonious and inviting entrance to the backyard.
Barbeque and outdoor dining: A barbeque and outdoor dining area with outdoor furniture and countertop. The barbeque is equipped with a grill, a sink, and a refrigerator. The outdoor dining area has a table, chairs, and a chalice that adds a touch of elegance and warmth.
Chill zone: A chill zone with a pergola and a chalice. The chill zone is a cozy and relaxing spot to enjoy the view of the backyard and the water fountain. The pergola provides protection from the sun and the chalice creates a soothing sound and a romantic atmosphere.
Red brick: A red brick that goes around the backyard, as the major landscape language to accommodate all kinds of bamboo, birds of paradise, and other plants that are dispersing throughout the entire property. The red brick adds color and contrast to the greenery and creates a sense of unity and coherence in the design.
Water fountain: A water feature right by the chill zone which is at the center of the property and not disrupting any foot traffic. The water feature is a fountain that creates a focal point and a relaxing sound in the backyard.
Layered landscape: A layered landscape that consists of lavender and drought-resistant plants. The first layer is lavender that adds fragrance and beauty to the backyard. The second layer is a bigger type of clinger plants that provide texture and variety to the landscape. Behind them, red roses that add a pop of color and charm to the backyard.
This backyard transformation is an ongoing project. The homeowner is considering adding a vegetable garden for some fresh produce and aesthetics to the yard. We’re excited to show you how that will look. Subscribe to our newsletter to get updated on this project and see more of our amazing backyard landscape designs.
